Volunteer Onboarding and Orientation.

Give a new volunteer a real welcome and connect them to the mission and people, and set them up with what good looks like and who to ask, because the first experience decides whether they return.

Part A. The welcome. On a volunteer's first day

ItemReady?
They are expected, and someone is ready for them, not left standing around
They meet the people they will work with
They hear the mission and see the difference the work makes
They understand where they fit and why their part matters

Part B. Set them up. Before they are on their own

The test: by the end of the first session, does the volunteer feel welcome, know what they are doing, and feel the point of it? If not, one of the three was missed.
