Personnel Records and Filings.

Set up the records and filings an employer is required to keep, because missing them is a compliance exposure most leaders do not know they have.

Personnel files. For each employee, a file containing

ItemIn place?
Signed offer and job description
Employment eligibility verification and tax withholding forms
Handbook acknowledgment
Pay and classification record
Performance records over time

Keep confidential files, medical and the like, separate from the main personnel file, and confirm at the compliance step whether your situation requires that separation, since it often does.

Filings and obligations. Confirm you are handling

FilingHandled?
Payroll taxes and the associated filings
New-hire reporting where required
Workers compensation and unemployment insurance where required
Any annual employer filings for your jurisdiction and size

The test: if you had to produce any one employee's complete, compliant file tomorrow, could you? If not, that is the gap to close.
