Negotiate the terms

TermYour agreement
How the missions combine
Governance and the board of the new organization
What happens to leadership
What happens to staff and programs
The name and identity
The legal structure of the combination

The rule to hold: protect the mission and the people served above institutional pride, name, or ego.

Secure the approvals

Good terms protect the mission and the people, not the pride of either organization, and they are approved through the formal steps a merger legally requires. A merger agreed on a handshake, or without the required approvals, is not sound. Where the negotiation is stalling on ego rather than mission, name that plainly. Feeds the Integration Plan.
